Ongoing Lottery Scam The
Dodge County Sheriff’s Department has received complaints of
people getting phone calls or letters claiming they have won a
large amount of money in a lottery. The “winner” is told they
have to supply personal and banking information to the lottery
before the money can be sent. Some "winners" are asked to send
a large amount of money to claim the prize.
Another
common scam is where someone claiming to be a lottery sends a
letter saying the person has won a very large amount of money.
Included with this letter is often a cashiers check for
several thousand dollars. The person is directed to deposit
the cashiers check and in return send money back to the
lottery to pay for processing fees or taxes. It often takes
several days or even weeks to determine that the cashiers
check was bad. This usually occurs after the person has sent
the money back to the lottery. That is their plan—they send
you a bogus check and you send them good money back.
Most of these scams appear to be from Canada and look
very professional. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department urges
people to be VERY cautious and alert when dealing with the
types of letters or calls mentioned above.
