NATIONAL WORK ZONE AWARENESS WEEK

From simple pothole patching to reconstructing complete highways, the construction season in Wisconsin has already begun in some areas.

The week of April 4th has been designated National Work Zone Awareness Week by the Federal Highway Administration.

Statistics show that 85% of fatalities in work zones are drivers and their passengers, the vast majority being drivers.

Construction workers may be your friends and neighbors.  They are also someone’s husband or wife, father or mother, and brother or sister.

State law in Wisconsin for maintenance vehicles and workers is the same as for emergency vehicles – drivers must move over or, if that is not possible, must slow down.

Tips for drivers in work zones include:

1.    Stay alert and eliminate distractions – make work zones a no-phone zone.
2.    Expect the unexpected – construction vehicles can make sudden moves at
       any time.
3.    Don’t tailgate, and watch for brake lights – rear-end crashes are the most
       common in work zones.
4.    Follow detours when posted – workers are expecting no traffic on a
       closed and detoured road.
5.    Always wear your seat belt.
6.    Be patient.

Let’s all stay safe this construction season.  The life you save may be your own.
